Is it cheaper to build your own yurt?
Yurts are a low cost and portable way to start going off grid. While there are many yurts for sale commercially, the cheapest (and funnest!) way to start living in a yurt is to build one yourself. Here is a cheap and easy way to build your own yurt, based on the plans I used when I build my own off grid yurt.
Can you put a yurt on the ground?
The platform for the yurt needs to be at least 5″ above the ground or any exterior decking. For those who would like to make use of the platform for storage, having it be at least 18″ to 24″ inches above the ground is best. This also allows room for plumbing and electrical wiring as well.
Do yurts need foundations?
The yurt platform serves as a structural element to anchor the yurt and hold it in place. Most homes are built with an in-ground foundation; however, yurts are always supported by a platform typically anchored with concrete blocks and raised off the ground with wooden posts.
What base does a yurt need?
All yurts require a simple timber decking base. We recommend using minimum 5” x 2” (50mm x 125mm) treated timber supports with pressure treated timber planks, (i.e decking /scaffold planks, with a minimum thickness of 30mm).
Are yurts warm in winter?
And sure, New England winters can get pretty cold, but with the right planning we’ve found living in the yurt to be perfectly comfortable and warm, even in the depths of Vermont winter. A woodstove or other heat source is a given in winter yurt life.
Can you build a yurt without planning permission?
Needless to say, you can’t simply build a yurt anywhere; you’ll need the landowner’s permission, and you might sometimes also have to apply for planning permission. You’ll also need to think about where you situate your yurt in terms of wind, rain and potential floods.

A number of California counties, including Napa and Mendocino, and cities such as Los Gatos and Eureka, have granted permits on yurts for a range of uses, including housing. In Marin, yurts are permitted as non-habitable structures only.

On average, you can expect to pay about $27,000 to build a yurt home. Depending on size, location, and several other features, that average can range from $11,500 to $44,000. That includes about $2,000 to $5,000 in labor, $6,000 to $30,000 for materials, and $3,000 to $7,000 for the base platform.
How do you insulate a yurt floor?
Insulate the floor Heat may be lost through the yurt floor unless you add insulation. A good way to do this is to install rigid foam insulation between floor joists. Installing plywood skirting around the perimeter of the platform will also aid with insulation by stopping cold air from flowing beneath the floor.
What is the lifespan of a yurt?
On average, a basic yurt will last anywhere from 8 to 15 years. The wooden frame of the yurt can last much longer than 15 years, but the weak spot is the canvas covering. It’s longevity depends on the amount of solar exposure, humidity and maintenance by the owner.
