USES: Pegfilgrastim is a long-acting form of the drug, filgrastim. These drugs, called colony-stimulating factors, are used to help stimulate the bone marrow to make white blood cells in patients who are not able to produce enough white blood cells on their own. White blood cells help the body fight infections.

Pegfilgrastim injection products are used to reduce the chance of infection in people who have certain types of cancer and are receiving chemotherapy medications that may decrease the number of neutrophils (a type of blood cell needed to fight infection).

This medication is usually given at least 24 hours after chemotherapy to stimulate the growth of new, healthy, white blood cells (WBC). Pegfilgrastim is a longer acting form of filgrastim and the manufacturer recommends that it should not be given within 14 days prior to chemotherapy.

The timing can vary. Clinical studies showed that clearing Neulasta from the body is affected by your body weight and the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) present in your blood. In general, after one injection, Neulasta is completely eliminated from your system within 14 days.
